Siegfried Contemporary is pleased to present an exhibition of artworks in Venetian glass by Paola Petrobelli.

Born in Padova, Petrobelli trained as a molecular biologist to later establish her design practice in London in the early 2000s. The use of Murano glass is central to Petrobelli’s practice. Her work negotiates a precise balance between material heritage and contemporary experimentation, positioning craft not as an endpoint but as a site of further investigation and reinterpretation. Petrobelli has developed a portfolio characterised by strict formal qualities that accentuate the architectural nature of her glasswork. Eschewing the purely decorative, Petrobelli masters colour and shape.

The body of work presented in Paris is part of Petrobelli’s ongoing investigation in open ended systems: objects become modular construction systems, where rigorously conceived, individual sections can be stacked, reordered and swapped to create innumerable forms and colour-ways in continuous evolution. Modularity becomes a conceptual tool, a means of questioning permanence, hierarchy, and control, while allowing space and the user to play an active role in determining the work’s final configuration. In this way, her practice aligns more closely with post-minimal and conceptual spatial art than with conventional product design.

Alongside her independent practice, Petrobelli has collaborated with Wallpaper* magazine for its Handmade series, and with Christian Dior, Peroni, and The Other Criteria, extending her research across editorial, fashion design, and cultural contexts. Her work has been presented institutionally at the Triennale Design Museum, Milan, on more than one occasions including Italian Design Beyond the Crisis, Autarky, Austerity, Autonomy (2014) and “W Women in Italian design” (2016) - situating her practice within critical discourse on contemporary Italian and European design. She has developed projects with leading international galleries including Perimeter Art and Design (Paris), Libby Sellers (London), Nilufar Gallery (Milan), Siegfried Contemporary (London), and Angela Weber (Zurich), and her work has been exhibited at major platforms such as PAD London and Paris, Design Miami–Basel, London Design Festival, Salone del Mobile, Milan, and Nomad Capri and St. Moritz.
